Nora Kathleen Haiwick was born on October 16, 1933, in Highmore, SD, the middle daughter of Ingvald and Della (Morrill) Haiwick. She was baptized in Highmore and confirmed at Vining Lutheran Church in Vining, MN.
In 1936, her family moved to a farm near Barnesville, MN, and in 1943 they relocated to a farm near Clitherall, MN. The farm has continued to hold a treasured place in the hearts of the family through the years. Nora was salutatorian of her high school class in Battle Lake, MN. She graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN in 1955 with a B.A. in business education.
Nora began her career teaching shorthand and typing at Buffalo High School in Buffalo, MN and later taught secretarial and business courses at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN. She also served as a parish worker at Elim Lutheran Church in Duluth, MN.
In 1959, Nora joined the faculty of Luther Junior College in Wahoo, NE as dean of women and business education instructor. There she met Verlyn Lindell, who was teaching math and chemistry. The two were married on December 16, 1961, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned more than six decades.
The couple moved to Carthage, IL, where Verlyn taught at Carthage College and daughter Karin was born, and then to Storm Lake, IA, where Verlyn taught at Buena Vista College and daughter Lisa was born. In 1967, the family settled in Sioux Falls, where Verlyn began his long tenure on the mathematics faculty at Augustana University.
Volunteering was deeply important to Nora. Her time and service commitments included Lutheran Social Services, the South Dakota State Penitentiary (where she taught typing to inmates), the South Dakota Synod, and the Ronald McDonald House.
Faith and church community were at the center of Nora's life. She was an active member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, where she participated in women's circles, served on committees and church council, and served as financial secretary. Nora was elected as a voting delegate to two churchwide assemblies, including the constituting convention of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1987.
Nora was devoted to her family and friends. She had a remarkable gift for knowing the right thing to say and offering comfort and encouragement to those around her. Her caring spirit, intuition, and genuine concern for others left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
She is survived by daughters Karin of Sioux Falls and Lisa of Brookings, sister-in-law Patty Lindell, nephews Doug Myrvold (Cathy), Paul Lindell (Rebecca), and Erik Lindell (Sally), along with many extended family members and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Verlyn, parents, sisters Ruth and Judy, and nephew Jim Myrvold.
Our family is immensely grateful to Nora's caregivers and her Sanford home hospice team for their compassion, comfort, and support. We extend special thanks to Alisa, who was there all the way from the beginning of Nora's hospice journey.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Sanford Hospice, or a charity of your choice.
