Patrick Joseph Healy, age 89, died peacefully on August 9, 2026, in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Pat was born on October 8, 1936, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to J.L. Healy and Marie (Quinlan) Healy. He grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he attended Cathedral schools, skated at Covel lake and graduated in 1954. He then attended the University of Notre Dame, earning a bachelor's degree in business in 1958 (Go Irish).

After college, Pat returned to Sioux Falls and joined his father to operate J.L. Healy Construction Company, a highway heavy construction firm that built asphalt highways throughout several Midwestern states.

Pat married the life of his party, Carolyn Billion, in 1961. In the early years Pat and Carolyn took their show on the road as that was where the work was. As the business and their family grew, Carolyn settled in, but they never settled down. From Toga parties to Halloween parties, it was not uncommon to see them out and about all dressed up.

Pat sold the construction business in 1989 to focus on Diesel Machinery (DMI), the equipment dealership he had purchased in the mid-1980s.

Throughout his career, Pat was actively involved in numerous business and civic organizations. He was especially proud of his service to the South Dakota Association of General Contractors and the National AGC. A two-time president of the state organization, he served on many boards and committees and was among the first recipients of the Golden Hardhat, a lifetime achievement award. Pat was also appointed by the governor to the South Dakota Department of Natural Resources board, where he served for 16 years. In addition, he served on the Northwestern Bank advisory board, was president of the South Dakota Equipment Dealers Association, vice president of the Boy Scouts Sioux Council, and a member of the Elks Club, the Knights of Columbus, the Westward Ho Country Club and the Palm brook County Club.

Pat loved hockey and played from age 7 until age 77. Although his slapshot may have lost some speed over the years, his passion for the game never faded. He was instrumental in founding the Sioux Falls Youth Hockey Association and coached both his sons, along with many other young players.

Later in life Pat and Carolyn purchased a house in Sun City Arizona and officially became Snowbirds. They would spend most of their winters playing golf and tennis with the many friends they had there. It definitely was their second home and they loved it there.

Pat also loved airplanes. Over the years, he owned and piloted many aircraft. He even crashed one of his Dukes in the 1980s when his landing gear froze on the way home after a ski trip. He had to put it down in Eagle, Colorado but walked away without a scratch, well on him anyway, can't say that about the airplane.

Pat and Carolyn had three children, six grandchildren and too many grand doggies to mention.

Mike (the oldest) and his wife Sonya live in Kansas City, Missouri where he is a practicing attorney. They have two children, Corbin (Katie) and Connor.

Katie, (the middle child) is a retired Senior Vice President of a Fortune 500 company, a current Professor of Finance, and lives in St. Petersburg, Florida. She has a daughter named Keira (Kelton).

Dan, (the youngest) is the current owner of DMI, and lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with his wife Lydia. They have three children, Ashly, Nathan (Mia), and Peter.

As was Pat's way, the family will be hosting an Irish wake on October 10th, 2026 starting a 5:30pm. We will tell a few stories, have food and drink, listen to some music and celebrate his life. Pat would have turned 90 on October 8th. The wake will be held at DMI (4201 N Cliff Ave in Sioux Falls).
