Obituary

Phillip "Bart" Fauteck left us peacefully on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at Dougherty Hospice. Bart was 83 years old, a cherished father and grandfather, and his loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

Funeral service will be 11:00 am Monday September 22, at East Side Lutheran Church, 1300 E. 10th Street, Sioux Falls, SD with burial at the Harford Cemetery, Hartford, SD.

Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 1:00 – 3:00 pm Sunday, September 21 at Miller Funeral Home Downtown, 507 S. Main Ave., Sioux Falls, SD.

Bart was born on March 27, 1942, to Phillip and Shirley (Barton) Fauteck in Bagley, Minnesota. He spent his formative years in Mahnomen and Pelican Rapids, where he graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1960, laying a strong foundation for the life he would lead.

His journey of learning led him to Moorhead State College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. Bart dedicated 35 years of his life to teaching history and social studies, sharing his passion for education before retiring in 1999.

On April 19, 1975, Bart married his beloved wife, Donna Shumaker, in a ceremony in Cottonwood, Minnesota. They both taught high school in Cottonwood until their retirement. Bart was known for keeping students on their toes in the classroom with his antics. They were blessed with two children, Jessica and Kyle, whom they took on many adventures during yearly camping trips around the country. After retirement, in 2009, they moved to Sioux Falls to be closer to family.

In retirement, Bart and Donna enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren and relaxing at the lake. They completed their travels, visiting all 50 states before Donna passed away in 2018. Bart continued to help out with his grandchildren until his health slowed him down last year. They were also members of East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.

Bart will be lovingly remembered by his children, Jessica (Theron McChesney) Fauteck and Kyle Fauteck, both of Sioux Falls. He took great pride in his role as a grandfather to his three beloved grandchildren, Julian, Elsa, and Lotte McChesney, who brought him endless joy and frustration. He also leaves behind an aunt, Helen Barton of Manhattan Beach, California, and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and cousins.

Bart was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Donna Fauteck.
