Richard "Dick" Trevor Carnahan, a devoted son, husband and father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, and loyal friend, passed away peacefully at home on December 12, 2025, at the age of 82.

Dick was born on July 25, 1943, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Thelma (Knutson) and Trevor Carnahan. He grew up in Sioux Falls, attended public schools, and graduated from Washington High School in 1961. While college briefly entered the picture, Dick quickly discovered that duck hunting held far more appeal than the classroom, a theme that would reflect his lifelong love of the outdoors.

Dick began what became a 40-plus-year career with John Morrell and Company, leaving for a period to proudly serve his country in the United States Army as a Military Police officer in Germany from 1965 to 1967. He returned to Morrell and retired in 2008, taking great pride in his near-perfect attendance and strong work ethic throughout his career. Dick was also a proud member of the American Legion.

On September 16, 1967, Dick married Sandra "Diane" Herington, the girl who had once been his childhood neighbor. They reconnected while Dick was home on military leave and stayed connected through handwritten letters until he returned home for good. Together they shared 38 years of marriage and raised three children, building a family rooted in loyalty and love.

Dick's early life was shaped by resilience. He lost his father in a tragic accident at John Morrell when he was just five years old. His mother, Thelma, raised him with strength and determination, instilling values that Dick carried forward every day of his life. He excelled in sports, especially basketball and baseball, and his love of baseball became legendary. To this day, his daughters still hear stories from strangers who remember watching him launch long home runs in Legion and amateur baseball. He was immensely proud of his Legion and Amateur State Baseball Championships and found deep joy on the ballfield, a passion he proudly passed on to many of his children and grandchildren.

An avid outdoorsman, Dick found peace and joy in hunting and fishing, forming lifelong friendships through countless shared adventures. Later in life, he discovered a love for golf and built a close-knit group of friends he played with regularly right up until his passing. Golf rewarded him well, including two holes-in-one, the first at age 70 and the second at age 80 - accomplishments he quietly cherished.

Dick was also a talented woodworker and an equally gifted gardener. He especially loved growing tomatoes, tending his garden with care and pride, and canning the fruits of his labor. His garden often produced more tomatoes than he could ever use himself, and he took great joy in sharing his abundance with friends, neighbors, and family. For Dick, the harvest was never just about the tomatoes; it was about connection, generosity, and giving something he had grown with love.

He was a natural storyteller who delighted in reminiscing about good times, shared laughter, and cherished memories. He lived simply and intentionally, teaching his family the importance of hard work, honesty, and loyalty. Above all else, Dick believed people mattered most, and he made every effort to attend as many school and sporting events for his kids and grandkids as possible and to be present for those he loved.

Grateful to have shared his life are his daughters, Heather Matz (Shawn) of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Susan Anacker (Jeremy) of Parker, South Dakota; his four grandchildren, Bryan Matz (Sonya) of Enid, Oklahoma, Makenzie Matz of Denver, Colorado, Jackson Anacker of Parker, South Dakota, and Lauren Anacker of Parker, South Dakota; and his two great-grandchildren, Peyton and Sandra of Enid, Oklahoma, who brought him a great deal of joy these last few years. The family would also like to honor the extraordinary friendship Dick shared with his best friend of 68 years, Lynn Joneson. Together they shared baseball fields, family gatherings, vacations, hunting and fishing trips, and countless rounds of golf. Their friendship was a true gift and a testament to Dick's loyalty.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Diane, his son Patrick Trevor, and his sister Kathryn Berreth.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 19, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will take place Thursday, December 18, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with family present. Dick's life was defined by love, loyalty, generosity, and laughter. He will be deeply missed and warmly remembered by all who were lucky enough to know him.
