Rowland Lee Robinson, 78, of Sioux Falls passed away June 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Lee was born in Sioux Falls, graduated from Brandon Valley High School in 1965, attended the University of South Dakota, graduated from Sioux Falls College in 1971, and worked at John Morrell until his retirement.  He married Cynthia Swason in 1966; they lived near Valley Springs from 1976 to 2019 and attended Split Rock Lutheran Church.

Lee is survived by his adoring wife Cynthia and children Jill and Neil; sister Jane Andersen; in-laws Sue Robinson, Carla and Monte Oyen, Carolyn Jones, Steve (Cecil) Swason and Elizabeth Loyola Swason; chosen family Olivia, Lily, Sophia, Julie, and Eric Anderson; and 19 nieces and nephews.  Lee was preceded in death by his parents Rowland Francis and Harriet (Muxfelt) Robinson, brother Michael, sister Betty Lou Stauffacher, and brother-in-law Jim Andersen.

Lee was outstanding at forming genuine connections with people, taking a sincere interest in the things they cared about, and appreciating their unique selves. He never lost his sense of wonder and ability to be silly, and continued to get along famously with kids throughout his life. He was a wiz at solving word puzzles, coining new words, revising and creating proverbs, and composing alternate song lyrics (often sung just under his breath in church). Although he bragged of being "the most despised man in the community", Lee will be missed tremendously for his warmth and wit, caring and creativity, generosity and jest, and elaborate ice cream parties.

Lee's many talents include flower and vegetable gardening, woodworking, carpentry, and caring for animals (excluding snakes) -- skills he was able to fully develop when he moved with his family to the country in his late 20s. His animal companions over the years included dogs, fish, pigeons he trained for fun and competition, ducks, geese, chickens whom he conducted in parades around the yard, birds who frequented his bird feeders, and many cats who just showed up and stuck around. He loved to watch baseball, read U.S. history, play games, take photographs, and spend quality time with his people.

Lee bounced back miraculously from several health crises, was diligent about home treatments, and took great comfort near the end that he tried everything he could. His optimism, resilience, and effort undoubtedly prolonged his days on this earth. Along with his family, he was grateful for the care of the outstanding staff of Avera Home Hospice and the Dougherty Hospice House, who provided a peaceful transition and gentle passing.

A celebration of life will be held at Miller Funeral Home (507 S. Main Ave, Sioux Falls, SD), Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 4pm - 6pm.
