Ruth Cecilia Malloy, 99, passed away peacefully in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

Visitation will begin at 5:00 pm, with a prayer service at 6:00 pm on Thursday, October 23, at Miller Funeral Home, Downtown location, 507 S. Main Ave, Sioux Falls, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, October 24, at The Cathedral of St. Joseph in Sioux Falls, SD. Burial will follow at St. Michael Cemetery.

Ruth was born on August 24, 1926, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, into a large family of twelve children. She later moved with her family to Dundee, Minnesota, where she attended school. Growing up on the family farm, Ruth helped work the cattle, tended potatoes, and walked to school through pastures—often recalling the time a bull chased the children on their way.

At the age of 18, Ruth returned to Sioux Falls, where she began working at Sioux Steel and later at John Morrell & Co. It was during this time she met Gene Malloy. After their first meeting, Gene went home and told his mother he had just met the girl he was going to marry—and the following year, they did just that.

Together, they built a loving home and welcomed their daughter, Jean Ann, in 1956. Ruth devoted her life to caring for her family. She was a talented baker and seamstress, sewing all of Jean Ann's clothes and ensuring her home was always filled with warmth and laughter.

Ruth enjoyed dancing, bowling, and working on puzzles. She also had a passion for travel, exploring Europe and many destinations across the United States. Even into her later years, Ruth remained independent and active—mowing her own lawn, raking leaves, and shoveling snow, often refusing help from her neighbors.

She especially loved spending time outdoors with her beloved dog, Lily Grace.

Ruth will be remembered for her strong will, her generous heart, and her deep love for her family.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Jean Ann Malloy, Sioux Falls, SD, her beloved dog, Lily Grace; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding Ruth in death is her husband, Gene Malloy; parents, John and Elizabeth Hanten; brothers Clarence, Joe, Verlin and George; sisters Clara, Louise, Florence, Agnes, Gladys, Alice and Helen; dogs Bambi and Phoebe.
