Dr. Ryan Lee Sevening, 50 years old, tragically passed away in Cedar County, Nebraska on February 10, 2026, as the result of a vehicle accident.

Ryan Lee Sevening was born on May 7, 1975, in Watertown, South Dakota to Douglas Lee Sevening and Diane Kay (Nydam) Sevening. He moved to Vermillion at the age of three and called it home for the rest of his life. Ryan graduated from Vermillion High School in 1993. He then attended the University of South Dakota, earning his bachelor's degree in mass communication in 1997, followed by a master's degree in mass communication in 1999. While pursuing his doctorate in adult higher education, which he attained in 2006, Ryan began his professional career in broadcasting.

Ryan's career encompassed a variety of roles in higher education. He contributed his expertise at South Dakota State University, Sheldon Community College, and most recently at Northeast Community College. As a Broadcasting/Videographer instructor, Ryan taught media arts, broadcasting, film, English, grammar, and speech. Additionally, he provided sports streaming services for the athletics department at Northeast Community College.

For more than twelve years, Ryan was dedicated to Vermillion's Parks and Recreation Department, where he supported a broad spectrum of community and sports activities. His involvement included umpiring baseball and softball games, building playgrounds, and participating in numerous youth programs. A passionate sports fan, Ryan also served as an announcer and commentator for baseball and basketball tournaments at the University of South Dakota DakotaDome.

Ryan was passionate about making films and movies both professionally and for personal enjoyment. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia 76ers, and Atlanta Braves. Ryan was committed to his fitness routine and enjoyed cooking and creating new culinary dishes.

Ryan will be fondly remembered for his humor, sarcasm, and ability to make any moment memorable. To his family and friends, he was a beloved son, brother, "funcle" (fun uncle), prankster, comedian, karaoke singer, professor, classmate, teammate, fellow sports fan, travel companion, and best friend. Ryan was known for his gentle nature, broad smile, and twinkling eyes.

Those thankful to have shared Ryan's life include his mother, Diane Sevening of Vermillion; his brother Rod and sister-in-law Rebecca Sevening of Sioux Falls; his nieces Ava and Nya Sevening of Sioux Falls; and his aunt Mary Ann Sevening Lucas of Platte. He was preceded in death by his father, Doug Sevening, as well as his grandparents.
