Sally LaVergne, 92 of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away with family at her side on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at the Dougherty Hospice House.

Visitation with the family present will be from 5 to 7 pm on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at the Miller Southside Chapel, 7400 South Minnesota Avenue. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at Christ the King Catholic Church with private burial at the Minnesota State Veteran's Cemetery.

Sally was born April 11th, 1933, to Andrew and Mary (Reitmeier) Schlangen in Little Falls, MN. She attended St. Mary's grade school and graduated from St. Francis High School in Little Falls. During high school she worked at the Ripley Theater. After graduating she worked at the Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, MN, as a nurse's aid and later in childcare.

On May 23rd, l953, she married Gerald (Jerry) LaVergne in Little Falls, MN. They lived in the Canal Zone (Panama) and Omaha, NE, until Jerry was discharged from the Air Force and then in Minneapolis, MN. They moved to Bradenton, FL, in 1956 and operated a Soft Ice Cream Store (King Kone). They returned to Minneapolis in 1959 and in 1968 moved to Sioux Falls, SD.

In l972, Sally and Jerry started their own business, LaVergne's Inc. They later opened and operated LaVergne's Junior Shoes, a family run store in the Western Mall. Their first store featured a l923 GMC Firetruck used as a fitting platform. They later opened LaVergne's Red Cross Shoes in Sioux Falls and Sioux City, Iowa, Joyce-Selby Shoes in Sioux Falls and Des Moines, IA and relocated LaVergne's Junior Shoes to the Empire Mall. Sally was very active in the operations of the business, especially in the LaVergne's Junior Shoe stores. They retired in 1998 and continued to live in Sioux Falls.

After retirement Sally did volunteer work at the St. Vincent de Paul store in Sioux Falls. Sally and Jerry liked to travel, made trips to Ireland, Spain, Hawaii, and many visits to family. She loved spending time at the lake cabin near Little Falls, and was an avid bird watcher.

Sally is survived by her two daughters, Kathy (Mark) Sinkey of Sioux Falls and Beth (David) Feinberg, of Golden Valley, MN; three sons, John (Wendy)  LaVergne of Sioux Falls, Dave (Sandy) LaVergne of Cold Spring, MN, and Dan (Suzanne) LaVergne of Grand Forks, ND; multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sister, Cele McGonagle.
