Saranne "Sally" Ensberg peacefully passed at Ava's Hospice House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on Sunday, January 4, 2026.
Sally was born on April 20, 1930, to Charles and Anna (Miller) VanSwearingen in Frederick, Maryland. After graduating from Frederick High School, she studied nursing at Church Home Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. As a registered nurse, Sally worked for three years as an operating room nurse at Church Home Hospital. There she met Dorence Ensberg, whom she married on October 31, 1953.
Sally and Dorence moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 1954, where they raised a family of their own, welcoming three sons and a daughter. In addition to raising their family, Sally was very involved in many activities at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Sally loved reading and getting together with her book club. She was a member of the church circle, the Medical Auxiliary, and PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization).
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Mark (Colleen) Ensberg, Brian (Gail) Ensberg, Christine Ensberg, and Phillip Ensberg. She dearly loved her two grandchildren, Laura (Adam) Chandler and Sara (Nicole) Hefel-Ensberg; and two great-grandchildren, Savanna and Hudson Chandler.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Dorence.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 9, 2026, with a visitation beginning at 9:00 AM, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church located at 909 W. 33rd Street. She will be laid to rest next to her late husband at the Toronto Cemetery in Toronto, South Dakota. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Our Savior's Lutheran Church or the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO - an organization to provide educational support for women).
