Obituary

Sheri Verene Harner, 76, of Humboldt, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Born on August 5, 1949, in Sioux Falls to Gustav and Viola (Leisinger) Buchheim, Sheri grew up in Humboldt and graduated from Humboldt High School. She pursued higher education at South Dakota State University for two years.

On September 22, 1969, Sheri married Larry Lukes. Together, they relocated to Sturgis, South Dakota, where Sheri balanced family life with a diverse career, working for Montgomery Ward, the public school system, and Town and Country Plumbing. Following Larry Lukes' passing, Sheri found love again and was united in marriage to Larry Harner on June 5, 1977.

In 1991, Sheri began her career with the Meade County Treasurer's Office. Her professionalism and reliability led to her retirement in 2016 as Deputy Treasurer. Following the passing of her husband, Larry Harner, Sheri returned home to Humboldt in 2023 to be closer to her beloved family.

Sheri lived life with an open heart and a gentle spirit. She eagerly anticipated the arrival of spring each year, finding peace and joy in tending to her flowers. Her quiet hours were spent reading, playing computer solitaire, and enthusiastically cheering on the Colorado Rockies. Sheri also possessed a vibrant sense of adventure; she loved traveling to the Pacific Northwest to see family, touring Graceland, and exploring the Caribbean on a memorable cruise.

A dedicated community member, Sheri was a long-time, active participant in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Sturgis.

Above all else, family was the true cornerstone of Sheri's life. She cherished every moment spent with those she loved. Known for her supportive nature, caring heart, and welcoming smile, Sheri's kindness left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Grateful for having shared her life are her daughters, Tammy (Mark) Bauman, Humboldt, SD, Penny Harner, Friday Harbor, WA; son, Mark (Tracy Treat) Lukes, Seattle, WA; granddaughter, Harley (Bailey) Herman, Humboldt, SD; and great-grandson, Maverick Herman. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; great-granddaughter, Shevi Herman; brothers, Charles and Bernie Buchheim; and sister, JoAnn Reichardt.

The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am Friday, May 22, 2026, at St. Ann Catholic Church, Humboldt, SD. The visitation will be at the church from 5:00 to 7:00 on Thursday evening.
