Shirley Mae Norberg was born January 17, 1927, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Ruth and Paul Norberg and passed into the arms of her heavenly Father on December 4, 2024.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2024, from 5-7 PM at Miller Funeral Home Downtown Chapel, 507 S. Main Ave. A graveside service will be held Friday, December 13, 2024, at 10 AM at Woodlawn Cemetery, 2001 S. Cliff Ave. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025, at 11 AM at Central Church, 3102 W Ralph Rogers Rd, Sioux Falls, SD.

The little Norberg family of three grew to four a few years later with the birth of Shirley's brother Stanley. During her childhood, her father, Paul, was a partner in Norberg Paints (a continuing family business to this day), and the family was active in Central Baptist Church.

Loving music, Shirley began piano lessons at an early age and became an organist at Central when she was 12. She earned her B.A. from Sioux Falls College (now University), highlighted by her senior recital in which she performed Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. On June 27, 1948, she married her sweetheart, Arthur Hoehl.

Shirley and Art established their home in Sioux Falls, where they raised their children, Jack, David, and Jenny. Art was Business Manager of the Sioux Falls Public School System, and Shirley taught piano students in her home studio. They were deeply committed to serving the Lord in their church, including Shirley as organist and Sunday school teacher; Art as song leader and Sunday school superintendent. Together, they developed and led a Sunday night youth gathering called Youth Fellowship for many years.

Shirley was known for her creativity, gifted teaching, and passion for walking faithfully with the Lord. Drawn to vivid colors and sparkle, she painted, sewed, designed, and fashioned all manner of creative things. In addition to instructing piano students into her 90s, she dearly loved studying and teaching the Bible. She served for ten years as a teaching leader in Bible Study Fellowship and for 17 years brought the Bible to life through her television program, The Joy of Living. She also enjoyed leading her own Bible studies in her home for decades—up until the last few months of her life.

Her deepest desire was to know God and honor him in everything she did. She yearned for others to know the Lord, and looked for ways to share her faith with anyone and everyone whose path crossed hers. She loved being with people and had a dynamic, radiant energy that drew people to her. She was interested in the lives of each family member, piano student, friend, and neighbor and regularly prayed for their flourishing. She cherished every visit from her children, their spouses, and each grand and great-grandchild.

Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Arthur, and dear brother, Stanley Norberg.

She will be missed by her children, Jack (Deborah) Hoehl, David (Wanda) Hoehl, and Jenny (Paul) Currie; nine grandchildren, Melissa (Chad) Smith, Heather (Cam) Stottler, Lindsay (Steve) Almos, Brandon (Kelly) Hoehl, Courtney (Dale) Eng, Kati Hoehl, Walker (Abbie) Currie, Reeve (Tyler) Klatt, and Simone (Curtis) Baum; and 15 great-grandchildren: Lauren, Isaac, Aubrey and Jillian Smith; Kendel Stottler; Tristan, Jesse, and Jacob Almos; Sienna, Hudson, Jeffrey, and Garrett Eng; Esme and Celia Currie; and Luca Klatt.

Memorials may be designated to either the Art and Shirley Hoehl Youth Fund (Central Church, Sioux Falls) or the Art and Shirley Hoehl Scholarship Fund (Bethel University, Arden Hills)
