Stephen Gregory Zimmer, age 84, passed away on Friday, December 20, 2024, at Avera in Sioux Falls, SD. He was born on January 19, 1940, to John and Mary (Flannery) Zimmer in Humboldt, SD.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 26, 2024, from 5-7 pm with a scripture service and rosary starting at 7 pm at Miller Funeral Home Westside Chapel, 6200 W. 41st St. The Funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, December 27, 2024, at St, Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, 1800 S. Katie Ave.  Private burial will be held at St. Michael Cemetery.

Steve was raised on the family farm near Humboldt and attended St. Ann's School and Humboldt High School. After graduating from high school, Steve attended Nettleton Business College, earning a degree in bookkeeping.

Steve began a 35-year career as a bookkeeper at Pitt's Inc. salvage yard.  When Pitt's Inc. closed, he worked at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport and First National Bank until his retirement in 2009.

In 1967, Steve met the love of his life, Donna Calmus, and after a whirlwind courtship, they were married on June 15, 1968, at St. Agatha Catholic Church in Howard, SD. They were married for 56 1/2 years. They made their home in Sioux Falls, SD, and were blessed with three children: JoAnn, Stephen, and Mike.

Steve enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the weekly poker parties with his brothers and their spouses and, later, weekly card games with his nieces on Wednesday nights.  Even with his increased dementia, Steve always remembered what cards had been played and was usually the winner. Steve also enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles, word searches, and watching National Geographic and the History Channels.

Steve and Donna loved traveling, especially casino trips and bus tour trips. Some of their fondest memories were of their Alaskan cruise, Fall tour to the New England states, and a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France.

Steve was a quiet, gentle soul with a deep faith.  He found great comfort and peace while visiting his daughter's grave and tending to her flowers.  He was a man of strong conviction and work ethic.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Donna Zimmer of Sioux Falls, SD; sons, Stephen J. of Marshall, MN, and Mike W. of Sioux Falls, SD; grandsons, Stephen D. and Jacob Zimmer, both of Marshall, MN; and sister-in-law, Arlene Zimmer of Sioux Falls, SD.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, JoAnn Zimmer; parents, John and Mary Zimmer; brothers, John J., Francis, David, Gene, Peter, Lyle, and John P.; sister, Rosemary McMahon; and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.
