Heaven has gained a beautiful angel and healer of children, and her name is SUE HIEB-STEWART. Sue passed away peacefully on October 1, 2024, surrounded by her family.

Sue is preceded in death by her parents Betty and Marvin Hieb. She is survived by her husband Ronald, children Spencer (25) and Mason (23), sister Cindy Hieb-Thompson, niece Carrie (Joe) and great-nephew Payton.

She was born on July 16, 1960 in Sioux Falls, SD to Betty and Marvin Hieb. She attended Washington High School, and then went on to South Dakota State and the University of North Dakota where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree, specializing in Pediatric Occupational Therapy.

Her first job, a wonderful training ground for her future career, was at Children's Care Hospital as a traveling OT. Back before GPS, Mapquest and cell phones, Sue and her co-worker packed their maps and their coolers on Monday, stayed in hotel after hotel, and chased through country roads and across fields to provide the care the children needed. Eventually Sue became the OT/PT/Speech/Psych/Social Work supervisor.

Sue moved to Minneapolis for love, and began what would be a 28-year career at HCMC, a level 1 trauma center. Over the years, she helped thousands of inpatient and outpatient children and families, leading them to a better quality of life. Sue was NDT certified, had advanced baby training and manual therapy certifications, and was the first OT to get board-certified in pediatrics in Minnesota.

For several years, Sue worked at Kids Abilities, a pediatric therapy clinic serving children with many different and unique needs, and the M Health Fairview Masonic Children's Hospital in the NICU.

Not only was Sue incredibly helpful with her patients but looked for other ways to serve those in need as well. She participated in an initiative at HCMC to provide food bags to food-insecure children and their parents, was an advocate for child safety, including promoting correct use of car seats and helmets, and went on a mission trip to Nicaragua to help modify equipment and turn them into wheelchairs.

Sue married Ronald Stewart on September 13, 1997, and soon had 2 beautiful children, Spencer and Mason, who were the loves of her life. Sue worked hard to create strong family traditions, such as Christmas PJs, a gift an hour on Christmas, special Christmas ornaments each year, the best Halloween costumes, a gift an hour while on road trips, endless photos of her kids and family, and The Stewart Times.

They had many adventures together, and especially loved traveling, including to New York, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., San Diego, and her favorite place: Destin, FL. Sue was lucky to travel to Destin one last time in August with her family, a precious gift of time and togetherness.

Sue was also blessed with many great friends she met along the way. From Sioux Falls to Minnesota – college friends, work friends, her children's daycare friends, neighbor friends, and family friends. The list was long.

To know Sue was to love her. She was hilarious, could break into song at any given time, preached the importance of matching, and didn't hesitate to tell someone if they were committing a fashion violation. She always wore the perfect jewelry with every outfit, and let others know if they were wearing dark colors too often. She wasn't a doctor but played one on TV (she diagnosed several friends with illnesses, leading to successful treatments), and never hesitated to share knowledge as part of "operation shared learning". Sue could chat with anyone, and was interested in everyone she met. She was quick to roll her eyes if she didn't agree with you, was technology-challenged, loved cooking for her family, was an excellent gift giver, and always, always came with treat bags. The beach was her happy place, she loved toes in the sand, suntans, pedicures, and floating in her pool with a good book. She was one-in-a-million and will be greatly missed by all that knew her.

Memorial Service will be held 10:30am Saturday, December 7, 2024, at Miller Southside Chapel, 7400 S. Minnesota Avenue in Sioux Falls.
