Susan Gayle Vessells, 67, of Hartford, South Dakota, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones, on November 7, 2025, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Born in Oceanside, California, Susan was the beloved daughter of Betty Gerene Wheeler and Clarence Henry Jr. She graduated from Marvell High School in Marvell, Arkansas, and went on to dedicate much of her life to caring for others as a traveling CNA. In her later years, she found joy and peace working as a painter and helping restore and clean homes—always putting her creativity, warmth, and hardworking spirit into everything she did.

Susan, lovingly known as Susie, had a one-of-a-kind personality and a gift for leaving a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was a stranger to no one and known by the name "Mawmaw" to almost everyone. Susie had an amazing sense of humor and the ability to make anyone laugh. She was a collector of beautiful antiques and unique treasures, each piece holding special meaning to her. Susie loved spending time with her family and grandkids, enjoying the outdoors, watching crime documentaries, and coloring. Her laughter, warmth, and unforgettable presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her children, Shona Bartlett, Michael Spath, and Chase and Sondra Vessells; her brothers, Scott Henry and Steven Henry; her grandchildren, Mallory Mora, Madison Mora, Payton Mora, Keaton Vessells, Karson Vessells, Coy Vessells, and Kye Vessells; and her great-grandchild, Derick McFayden.

Susan is preceded in death by her parents, Betty Gerene Wheeler and Clarence Henry Jr.

A celebration of life will be held in her honor on Sunday, November 16th, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Big J's, 211 North Stofferahn Dr., Humboldt, SD 57035. Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate the incredible life of a woman who meant so much to so many.
