Thelma Fae
Moberly
Dec 7, 1926 — Mar 9, 2022
Sioux Falls
Our mother, Thelma Fae (Iverson) Moberly, 95, slipped peacefully into God's arms on March 9, 2022.
Memorial Services will be held 10:30am Monday, March 14, 2022, at First United Methodist Church, 401 S. Spring Avenue in Sioux Falls. The family will be present to greet friends from 2-4 Sunday, March 13, 2022, at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue.
Mom and her twin sister, Elma, were born in a rural Sioux Falls farm house to Sherman Arthur and Nellie May Iverson on December 7,1926. Their survival as infants weighing about 3 pounds each was miraculous.
Mom attended Sioux Falls public schools and graduated from Washington High School in 1944. She married Richard O. Moberly in 1948. To this marriage Linda, Mark, John and Brian were born. Dad's ministry led them to serve Methodist churches in Dell Rapids, Doland, Miller, Sturgis, Aberdeen, Huron, and Sioux Falls. Mom served tirelessly as the pastor's wife while wrangling the needs of four growing children.
Being an elementary school secretary, when her children were older, was fulfilling for her. She established lasting friendships with members of each school staff. Bandaging skinned knees, drying tears, and dispensing hugs made each day special for her.
The focus of Mom's life was most definitely her family. She was happiest when surrounded by her kids and grandkids. Our annual family reunion at Lewis and Clark State Park was the high point of the year for her.
Through her years of retirement, Mom found ways to be of quiet service to others. She volunteered for eighteen years at the Sanford GI lab…being named their "volunteer of the year." Countless babies have snuggled under receiving blankets sewn by Mom. A door buster flannel sale was always a good reason to get to the fabric store early in the morning. Knitted prayer shawls and dish scrubbies found their ways to many appreciative people over the years, as well.
Mom always said, "Yes" to new experiences. She and Dad traveled internationally to Turkey, Great Britain, Norway, and Switzerland, to name a few countries. She also loved accompanying her kids and grandkids on various vacation adventures.
Mom was proud of being able to live independently (with help from her boys, of course). She moved from her home to Sunnycrest Village when she was 90 years old, and enjoyed the hospitality of new friends there. Walking down the halls and using the fitness bicycle were daily health habits for her.
Mom's philosophy of life can be simply stated…"Every day is a gift." She greeted each new day with the expectation that something wonderful might happen. She lived her life with a deep, abiding faith in God, and unconditional love for her family.
Our mother is survived by her children, Linda (Mark) Chaplin, Mark Moberly, John (Kelly) Moberly, and Brian (Patti) Moberly, 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, twin sister, Elma Black, sister, Elda Buxton and many nieces and nephews who were very special to her. She was preceded in death by our father, Rev. Richard O. Moberly, her brother, Clifford Iverson, sisters, Ruth Pingree, Elsie Winfree, Garnett Stoutenburg, and her parents, Sherman and Nellie Iverson.
Mom always felt deeply for people who were experiencing hardship. With that in mind, we would like to suggest that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the First United Methodist Church, 401 South Spring Avenue, Sioux Falls. We are going to designate that memorial donations be sent to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief). Mom would be happy to know that she helped alleviate some of the world's suffering.
