Virgil Ernest Burress, age 87, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at his home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at Church at the Gate (6820 W. 26th St., Sioux Falls, SD). Family will be present for visitation from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Monday, May 12, 2025 at Miller Funeral Home – Downtown Chapel (507 S. Main Ave., Sioux Falls, SD). It was Virgil's wish that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Church at the Gate in his honor.

Virgil, son of Bazil and Ruby (Cox) Burress was born February 16, 1938 in Carthage, SD. His family moved to Canova, SD where he attended school and graduated from Canova High School in 1956. He enlisted in the US Army and served from 1959 to 1963.

Virgil married Barbara Dargen on July 26, 1969 and they made their home in Sioux Falls. He worked for Dakota News Inc. for many years and then drove buses for Sioux Falls Transit for 38 years. He was known as "Snowman #62" because he told passengers, "You can call me Snowman because I like snow!" When they got off the bus he would say, "Pray for snow!" He also enjoyed driving the team bus for the University of Sioux Falls football and basketball teams. Virgil liked watching car races on TV, especially the Indy 500, and following the Canova baseball teams. He spent time reading the Bible every day, especially Psalms.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Burress; a nephew, Marlon (Rene) Koepsell, Canova, SD; a niece, Becky (Joe) Thompson, Sioux Falls; sisters-in-law, Mary Brooks, Raleigh, NC; Kathleen Crowley, Sioux Falls; Roberta Dargen, Bandon, OR; Martha Dargen (Reuben), Sioux Falls; and a brother-in-law, Paul (Jacki) Dargen, Edmund, OK.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lyla; and his brother-in-law, Elroy Koepsell.
