Obituary

Vivian Faye McGraw “Faye” passed peacefully from this life at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls on October 27, 2026, at the age of 99.

Faye was born in Artesian, SD to Earl Ostrander and Josephine Mackovets Ostrander. She attended school in Fedora. She married Dale Saarheim in 1946. Dale and Faye had two children, Larry and Sandra. Her mother, Josie lived with her and helped with the children. Dale and Faye later divorced. Faye and Josie went on many road trips to visit family in Ohio, Virginia, Florida, Oklahoma and Arizona. She was immediately on the road when she heard a grandchild had arrived. Faye married Bernard McGraw on June 14, 1974. Bernie and Faye enjoyed traveling to south Texas with a group of campers to spend the winters in warmer weather until Bernie could not travel anymore. Bernie died in 1984.

Faye worked as a waitress at Pete’s Grill in Madison. She also worked at Montgomery Ward Catalog store and finally as the bookkeeper at J.C. Penney.

Faye continued living in Madison where she enjoyed bowling, meeting up with friends and crocheting. Many family members were fortunate to receive beautiful afghans. Her mother died in 2005. Faye sold the house in Madison and moved to Sioux Falls. She became a member of First United Methodist Church. She joined the Center for Active Generations and played cards and Bingo several days a week. She would often go early to help set up the card games and get to know everyone. She also joined Red Hats and had a lot of fun with them. She made many new friends.

Faye is preceded in death by her husband, Bernard McGraw; her mother, Josephine Ostrander; her father, Earl Ostrander; her brother, Robert Ostrander; her sister, Viola Creighton; and many extended family who passed before her.

Faye is survived by her son, Larry Saarheim; her daughter Sandra Osborne; her grandchildren, Stephanie Thomson and Bryce Osborne and wife Tracy; her great grandsons, Cole Thomson; Jacob and Brody Osborne; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. And do not forget, her grand dog, Molly!
