Wayne Allen Hanson April 4, 1945 – September 11, 2025

Wayne Allen Hanson, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and proud veteran, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025. Born in Webster, South Dakota, Wayne was the son of Melvyn and Ruth Hanson. He lived a life marked by service and quiet generosity.

Wayne received a bachelors degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wyoming and masters degree in engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology and went on to serve his country with distinction in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Major after 20 years. His career took him to Pickstown, Minot, Wright-Patterson, Vandenberg and Peterson Air Force Bases.  He was also an instructor at the Air Force Academy where he taught physics, electrical engineering, astronomy and was a director for the planetarium and observatory. His dedication earned him numerous honors, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, and the National Defense Service Medal.

On May 26, 1976, Wayne married Beverly Scherbauer in Xenia, Ohio. Shortly after, they relocated to Colorado Springs when Wayne was stationed at the Air Force Academy. In 1995, the couple made Sioux Falls their home as Wayne began his 13-year career at the EROS Data Center.

Wayne was an active member of the First Congregational Church, where he generously volunteered with Project Car and served on the committee dedicated to restoring the church organ. His commitment to service extended to the broader community through his involvement with Active Generations' Workers on Wheels program.

Wayne's passion for model railroading was more than a hobby; it was a lifelong pursuit. As a member of the Sioux Valley Model Engineers Society for over two decades he found joy in the camaraderie of the group and developed many cherished friendships with other members of the club. He served as the clubs treasurer for 20 years and was instrumental in setting up their annual Trains at Christmas model railroad show and swap meet.  The circus train that Wayne built is something many visitors love seeing when they attend the clubs open houses and will continue to be displayed for visitors to enjoy.  Wayne also enjoyed genealogy and playing cards, especially bridge.

Wayne is survived by his beloved wife Beverly; sons Todd Hanson and Tim (Ginevra) Hanson; daughter Kimberly (Randy) Bouquet; grandchildren Christina (38), Jordyn (28), Theresa (6), and Georgina (6); and great-grandchildren Silas (11) and Mika (9). His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the values he upheld.

A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church on September 17, 2025, at 2:00 pm, followed by coffee and dessert.  In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Brooks Helping Hand Fund at First Congregational Church, honoring Wayne's commitment to faith and community.
