William (Bill) Broveak died March 29, 2025 at Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls, SD, with his wife by his side. He was 83.

William Edward Broveak was born April 23, 1941 in Sioux City IA to Lowell and Marie (Morgan) Broveak. He attended McCook grade school and walked everyday to school, sometimes using his older brother Marvin as a shield against wind and rain. (Yes, he told us, walking to school is a real thing). He attended Jefferson High School and the walking thing was replaced by bus. And later, his first of MANY cars: 1941 Chevy.

Following graduation in 1959, Bill joined the Army. About to embark to Germany, following basic training in Colorado, he found himself in New Jersey sitting at the same table as Elvis Presley. Elvis was returning to the states as Bill was leaving. "Nice guy", Bill said. Bill spent 3 years in Aschaffenburg Germany as a weapons specialist assigned to an artillery unit. In July of 1962 he returned home to surprise his mother on her birthday. Typical Bill.

Bill's career in telecommunications began in 1963 as a lineman with Northwestern Bell. While working for Mountain Bell in Idaho Springs CO, he received a Merit of Service Recognition for being first responder to a commercial airliner crash in the mountains. While working on the rescue project, he found himself in a local café with a couple of crew members and Flip Wilson. "Nice guy" he said. For the next 36 years he went from climbing poles and mountains to climbing corporate ladders. With further schooling he became a Federal Account Representative and worked with visiting Tribal Officials, Secret Service, Politicians and the like. During one of his trips to Rapid City, he had ice cream with the Beach Boys in the Howard Johnson's ice cream parlor. "Pretty cool" he said. At (early) retirement in 1989, he had ended his telecommunications career as a manger with the Business Network Division of AT&T.

As dedicated as he was to his work, his greatest dedication was to his children, the REAL celebrities of his life; son Roger Broveak (1965), and daughter Brenda Harshfield (1968), born to him in a previous marriage to Sharon Braun. Bill loved to spend time supporting his kids through traveling, exploring the sand dunes (the present Dakota Dunes), attending their school and sporting events and just hanging together. His love of outdoors was shared with them through many camping experiences as well. The outdoorsman in him was born out of hunting and fishing expeditions with his uncles and brothers and in true traditional form, his nephews.

In the year of his retirement (1989) he entered into marriage with Denise Mills. In 1995 Bill and Denise built a mile-high home in the Black Hills. As it is said, build it and they will come. And they did. Numerous memories and relationships were built and nurtured in all seasons of the year as well as seasons of life. Bill's favorite celebrity guests were his granddaughters: Morgan and Karlee. Their grandpa created many an adventure for them, much to his delight! When the guest house wasn't filled with visiting family and friends, Bill and Denise sought even greater heights in the Rockies and Big Horn Mountains, often with camper in tow.

As health issues began to compete with his sense of adventure, Bill and Denise returned to Sioux Falls. Life took on new direction as Denise's career shifted to that of ordained ministry in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. She came to truly appreciate what his children already knew. Bill would do anything for his loved ones through his quiet, kind and gentle strength. His faith-filled life was displayed through these gifts.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Denise, son Roger Broveak of North Sioux City, daughter Brenda Harshfield and son-in-law Troy Harshfield of Jenks OK; granddaughters Morgan Harshfield, Tulsa OK, Karlee Harshfield (Karter Woodruff) of Wagner OK; great-grand children Scarlett, Klay and Kace. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Marvin and Alan Broveak.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Feeding South Dakota.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, April 4th at First Lutheran Church, 327 S. Dakota Avenue. The family will be present for visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday, April 3, at the Miller Hartford Chapel, 600 S. Western Avenue in Hartford.
