Marty moved to Sioux Falls in 1953 and married Richard "Dick" Braithwaite on August 20, 1954.  She and Dick spent the remainder of their lives in Sioux Falls with their three children Mindy, Tom, and Tim.  Family was the cornerstone of her life and her being.

Marty spent a number of years as a full-set bookkeeper with various organizations but developed a strong interest in court reporting.  She attended Stenotype Institute of SD from 1972 - 1976.  Though she did not obtain her degree in court reporting, her passion for the work continued and propelled her in becoming an instructor at the school and eventually the Dean of Court Reporting.  While continuing to teach at Stenotype, Marty began doing medical transcription in the early 1990s for McKennan Hospital in the evenings.  She quickly developed a new and vibrant interest in medical transcription, and after a few years at McKennan and at the lively age of 64, Marty took a major leap of faith leaving both of her positions and started her own medical transcription business – Dakota Med Trans.  Marty did transcription for a number of local medical clinics until her retirement in September 2016 at the age of 90.  Perhaps her proudest moment in her professional life was when she obtained her certification in medical transcription; the highest recognition for medical transcriptionists.  Often working long days and seven days a week, she loved doing transcription and never saw what she was doing as work.

Next to her family, Marty had a deep love for performing and entertaining.  Marty loved to sing and studied professional voice for a period of time with aspirations of pursuing an operatic career.  World War II and a desire to stay close to home kept her from accepting a full-ride offer to Julliard's School of Music and closed this chapter in her life.  However, her love for singing and the "big band sound" brought about a long history of weekend gigs at local area night clubs with the Jack Reynolds Orchestra and singing appearances with the Sioux Falls Municipal Band.  She also had a zeal for drama which led to countless theatrical performances in both musicals and plays.  Marty starred in a number of musical productions presented by the Sioux Valley Hospital Auxiliary highlighted by her leading role in the production of Mame. Her local acting career also included several leading roles in productions at the Sioux Falls Community Playhouse which spanned multiple decades.  Perhaps her proudest moments were when her children were a part of these productions. However, Marty's involvement in theater and music far exceeded performing as she was an avid supporter of many local organizations including the SD Symphony Orchestra, the Sioux Falls Playhouse and Orpheum Theater, the Washington Pavilion, and just about any form of the performing arts.  Marty also spent several years singing at First Presbyterian Church as a soloist and with the Sanctuary Choir as well as serving for a period of time as the church's music librarian.

If one word defined Marty – it would be family.  Nothing made her happier or prouder than her children. Marty so enjoyed anything to do with family, whether that was going to countless orchestra, band, or choral concerts to see her children perform, excursions with her children, dinners together, or just simply sitting around "chatting."  Affectionately known as "Tutu" (Hawaiian for grandmother), Marty glowed whenever family was present.  She is survived by her daughter Mindy "Mimi" Braithwaite, Sioux Falls; son Timothy "TJ" (Mary) Braithwaite, Sioux Falls; Daughter-in-Law Tacey Braithwaite, Sioux Falls; grandchildren Alison, (Keith) DeGroot, Sioux Falls, Rev. Arianne (Rev. Jeff) Lehn, Wilmette, IL, and Matt (Caitlin, DNP) Braithwaite, MD, Salt Lake City, UT; and 7 great grandchildren.  She was proceeded in death by son Thomas "Tom" Braithwaite, husband Richard "Dick" Braithwaite, brother Alfred Lohman Jr., and parents Alfred and Helen Lohman, Sr.
