Alan "Al" Ray De King passed away peacefully on January 9, 2026, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 64. A lifelong resident of Sioux Falls, Al was born on March 27, 1961, to Roy and Elbertha "Babe" (Buus) De King.

Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at Miller Westside Chapel, 6200 W. 41st Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57106.

Al graduated from Washington High School in 1979, where he played football. He was proud of his Sioux Falls roots and carried a deep appreciation for his hometown throughout his life.

Al married Carol Narveson in 1980 and was blessed with a son, Adam, who meant the world to him. He took great pride in being a father and later found even greater joy in becoming a grandfather. His granddaughters, Sierra and Alicia De King, were the light of his life. Nothing brought him more happiness than time spent with them, and his face always lit up when they were near.

Al was well known in the food industry and spent many years working diligently behind the scenes. He worked in the kitchens at Howard Johnson and the South Dakota State Penitentiary and at John Morrell's and Sunshine Foods. Al never sought the spotlight, but he valued hard work and took pride in doing his job well. During his time at Howard Johnson, he was even highlighted in an article written by the Argus Leader, a moment he quietly appreciated.

In his downtime, Al enjoyed life's simple pleasures. He faithfully watched weekly Survivor nights, often engaging in playful banter with his sister Deb throughout each episode. He was a devoted fan of the Atlanta Braves and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on. Al also enjoyed writing and took the time to write his own story. Some of his most treasured memories were made at the river cabin, where he loved fishing, hunting, and soaking in peaceful moments outdoors.

Al will be remembered for his gentle spirit, quiet humor, and deep love for his family. He leaves behind many memories that will be fondly cherished by all who knew him.

Grateful for having shared his life are his son, Adam De King of Bellingham, Washington; his granddaughters, Sierra and Alicia De King of Bellingham, Washington; his siblings, Dwayne (Sandy) De King of Blackhawk, South Dakota, Deborah "Deb" Handel (Jay Sterns) of Ridgeland, South Carolina, and Kevin (Tammy) De King of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; close cousin, Doug (Lori) VanderBrink of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; daughter-in-law, Julie De King of Bellingham, Washington; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and beloved cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
