John Dwyer, age 65, of Sioux Falls passed away Sunday, July 4, 2021 due to complications from ALS. No memorial service will be held, although contributions can be made to the ALS Association in lieu of gifts.

John was born in 1955 in New York City and grew up in northern New Jersey. He earned a BS degree in Geology from St. Lawrence University and an MS degree in Geological Sciences from the University of Colorado-Boulder.  John moved to Sioux Falls in November 1980 to work at the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) EROS Center as a remote sensing scientist. He retired from the USGS as Chief of the Science and Applications Branch in September 2019.

He is survived by his brother Paul, nephew Ryan, nieces Fenn (Eugene, OR) and Olivia (Portland, OR), former spouse June Thormodsgard and stepson Mark Wilka (Sioux Falls), and stepdaughter Marie Thormodsgard (Montreal), and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Dwyer (Tucson, AZ), and mother, Mary Alice Dwyer (Eugene, OR).
