Lyle E. Schroeder of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at Ava's Hospice House, with his family by his side. Lyle was 89.

The memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, August 20, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 5500 East 57th Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57108.

A visitation with family present to greet friends will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Monday, August 19, at Miller Funeral Home Downtown, 507 S. Main Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57104. The private family interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sioux Falls, SD prior to the memorial service.

Lyle Eugene Schroeder was born on October 20, 1934, to Fred and Mathilda (Demynck) Schroeder in Pipestone, Minnesota. He graduated from Pipestone High School in 1952. Following graduation, Lyle continued his education at Augustana with a degree in Business Administration, followed by a master's degree in Hospital Administration at the University of Minnesota.

Lyle met the love of his life, Betty Ann Melby while both were attending Pipestone High School.  They were married on Aug 29, 1954, and welcomed three children into their family, Sandra, Sheila and Jeff.

During his college years he worked part time at Sioux Valley Hospital -washing down walls in surgical suites, working in laundry, and working in the maintenance department. After graduating from Augustana, Lyle worked as a maintenance foreman. This enabled him to become familiar with the many aspects of a hospital operation. During this time, Lyle was able to relate to the needs and wants of the entry level employee.  After his residency at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana, Lyle, Betty and 3 small children returned to Sioux Falls.

In 1960, he began his lifelong career as the hospital President/CEO of Sioux Valley Hospital. Under his leadership, Sioux Valley Hospital became a leader in innovations, cost effectiveness, and high-quality medical care. Lyle was blessed to navigate his healthcare career with many talented colleagues.  After 36 years with Sioux Valley Hospital, Lyle retired in 1996.

During Lyle's service at Sioux Valley, he was also involved in many civic organizations. He was the General Chairman of the Forward Sioux Falls campaign, General Chairman of the Sioux Empire United Way, Chairman of the Sioux Falls Development Foundation, Board of Directors of First Bank Systems, Management Council of the Lake Madison Development Association, and was a Shrine Mason with El Riad Shriners, just to name a few.  Lyle also served on many professional organizations, such as, Chairman of the South Dakota Hospital Association, Board of Trustees of the American Hospital Association, and President of the Upper Midwest Hospital Association.   Lyle was honored to receive the Sioux Falls Development Foundation "Spirit of Sioux Falls Leadership Award" and to be inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame.

Family meant everything to Lyle. He enjoyed spending summers with his family at their home on Lake Madison. Lyle also enjoyed hunting, fishing, all sports, watching racing or the Minnesota Vikings. Lyle and Betty enjoyed spending time in the Cayman Islands during the winter.

Grateful for having shared his life are his cherished children, Sandra (Kevin) Hildring of Larchwood, IA, Sheila (Jeffery) Parks of Sioux Falls, and daughter-in-law Jill Schroeder of Brandon, SD; eight grandchildren, Nick (Amy) Hildring, Ben (Kim) Hildring, Anna(Blake) Nelson,  Austin (Becky) Parks, Alison (Carl) Serck, Ashton (Jade) Tinklenberg, Jared (Jasmine) Schroeder, and Jacob (Nicole) Schroeder; and 17 great grandchildren. Lyle will also be fondly remembered by a multitude of special friends and relatives.

Lyle was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Betty Schroeder, his son, Jeffrey Schroeder, his parents and his sister Joyce Goff.
