Rev. Richard Peterson, age 85, passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at Sanford Foundation Cottage in Sioux Falls, SD. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church (1300 S Sertoma Ave, Sioux Falls, SD). Family will be present one hour prior to receive guests. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the South Dakota Synod Endowment Fund in Richard's name to benefit seminary scholarships and debt reduction. Burial will be at a later date.

Richard Peterson was born to Luverne and Ruth Peterson on April 20, 1936 in Ruthven, Iowa. He graduated from high school and junior college in Estherville, Iowa. Richard then continued his education at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He attended Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, graduating in 1962. Richard married Joleen Peterson in 1956 and retired with her in 1998 in Sioux Fall

Richard served congregations throughout South Dakota: West Nidaros in Crooks, Grace and Good Hope in Willow Lake, Roslyn Lutheran and Fron in Roslyn, Emmanuel and Skefsrud in Beresford, and Pleasant Valley and First Lutheran in Wakonda. He was  chaplain at Woodfield Center in Beresford for 20 years.

Richard enjoyed vacationing in the Big Horns of Wyoming, carving at the Carving Club, attending Friday Guys Bible study, donating food, mentoring at school, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.

Richard is survived by his wife, Joleen; his two daughters, Debb (Kevin) Leih, Gillette, WY, and Jill Mabon, Sioux Falls; his son, Scott (Jana) Peterson of Sioux Falls, SD; his five grandchildren, Josh (Jerricka) Mabon, Emily Mabon, Jordan (Kale) Mason, Cole Peterson and Trey Peterson; his great-granddaughter, Camdyn Mabon; his sisters Marjean (Ron) Kaltved and Shirley Kaltved; his brothers, Steve (Anne) Peterson, Stan (Lori) Peterson, Mark (Jan Broderson) Peterson, and Brad (Lisa) Peterson; his brother-in-law, Joe Jamison; and many nieces and nephews.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Luverne and Ruth Peterson; his sisters, Pat Given and Noreen Jamison; his nephews, Marty and Bill Given; his niece, Connie Kiffmeyer; his grandnephew, Mic Given; and his brothers-in-law, Jim Given and Bob Kaltved.
